Ruby Tuesday

I love to cook, but lately haven't had much time to spend over a hot stove. So, I scheduled in a Christmas dinner party for all my displaced friends here in Alberta. After planning the menu, I realized I needed some gear to get this party started and low and behold, I discovered the perfect holiday combination over at my local Anthropologie. This Fiammetta Apron with matching pot holders is just what I need to host a holiday soiree. Now, if only cooking a turkey was this easy!

If you've started your holiday shopping already, you're ten steps ahead of me. Catbird appears to have my back this year though. With a few sections dedicated to their favourite gifts, shopping is a breeze. Wouldn't this tray look lovely in the bedroom or holding a few items on your coffee table? I love the oddity of it, while still looking so pretty.

There is nothing quite like a good, tailored coat. It's an investment that can make or break an entire outfit. So when I saw this tomato red stunner over at Cupcakes and Cashmere, I knew it was time to fork out some cash. You can find it here at Shopbop, along with this shorter red and white number that is, unfortunately, a little out of my price range. But a girl can dream right?

This stormy weather has me double-checking for matches. We all know about my obsession with matches, as seen in my very first post here on Pretty Things. Well, now I have found this match artwork by Pei-San Ng and I cannot contain my excitement. Rest assured, no matter how big the storm, you would never catch me striking one of these sticks!

Marlies Allmaier business card design

Absolutely crushing on these hand lettered/stamped business cards by Typejockeys, a design firm out of Austria. Gorgeous typography, brilliant red, and a tangible, handmade product - what more could you ask for?! Time to hit the craft store for a little ink methinks.

Vintage Suite (words to be true)   oil on canvas  2011

I can't believe I haven't done a post on Darlene Cole yet. A discovery while getting my Fine Art degree, I still find inspiration in every new piece of hers. The perfect artist for Ruby Tuesday, as many, many of her works use a juicy, ruby red. Cole's art explores the disappearance of childhood and carries a wonderful, dreamy quality. I also truly admire how she titles her work. I always find it extremely difficult to adequately name a piece, but hers seem to flow seamlessly into the work itself.

This Ruby Tuesday is a double whammy. Red Brick not only has a ruby namesake, but they also sell some pretty neat ruby related objects like the above wasp scarf. Red Brick is definitely the place to go for some light fall neck wear. And if you prefer something a little on the silky side, might I suggest this fab little retro inspired swimming scarf.

The weather is getting chillier, which means dressing in snuggly sweaters and cuddling up with a nice warm blanket. Blankets are also another way to add colour and pattern to the home as we go into hibernation mode for the winter. Maybe it's just me, but during the colder months I like to stay inside, preferably lounging on the couch and definitely cocooned in one of my favourite throws. Gypsa makes it easy to keep toasty with these beautiful handmade and antique quilts. At the moment I can't get enough of this red, pink and mustard colour theme.

Paul & Joe Full Coverage Lipstick in Rouge

It took me a long time to write this post. Every time I tried to put fingers to keys, I ended up sounding like a complete moron. Maybe it's because I am so in love with and have a long, personal relationship with this brand that it makes it almost impossible to do it justice. You see, Paul & Joe has come in and out of my life at some pretty key moments and this red lipstick is currently helping me through a big transition. It may seem silly to attribute a beauty product to helping you through something, but if that's what it does, why fight it? Paul & Joe will make you feel like a 30s ingenue. It will inspire you with it's luxe, feminine packaging. And it will comfort you like a warm cup of tea. But all you really need to know, is that Paul & Joe is a pretty thing indeed.

I love planning parties, and as such have become slightly obsessed with planning my wedding. While browsing one of my favourite wedding blogs, Ruffled, I was introduced to Michelle Edgemont. Michelle does handcrafted decorations, flowers and styling for weddings and boy, do they look good! I am especially fond of this fun table runner with lots of pops of red! She also crafts custom ring pillows seen here. Adorable.

Sunday Best

Jane Aldridge, the girl behind Sea of Shoes, is one of the most influential style bloggers on the interwebs today. Not only does she tastefully put together gorgeous ensembles for all of us to see, but she is also a designer collaborating with the likes of Urban Outfitters and Gryphon. A fan of the colour red, she really should be featured on our Ruby Tuesday pages, but Jane has such great style we couldn't refuse her our Sunday Best.

In honour of some upcoming Pretty Things nuptials, I am posting this gorgeous red inspired wedding photo. Shot by the fabulous Feather & Stone, this image of Letitia and Kristian is so cute it makes Elmo look like the Grouch. The handmade 50's inspired wedding dress is a stunner and if you hit up the full photo roll here, you'll notice the skirt actually has polka dots on it. Could it get any better?

In an attempt to actually be excited about the impending season change, I thought I'd share a beautiful and cozy little outfit from Zara. This sweater could turn into one of those everyday items that goes with everything. I am obsessed with the detailing. And I haven't completely climbed on board with patterned trousers, but this pair might have me happily hopping on.

Love, love, love this smattering of red from Diana Rikasari over at Hot Chocolate and Mint. The scarf/hat combo is so beachy, elegant that it makes me want summer to never end. And someone please tell me why I have yet to decorate my apartment with red bird cut-outs?! A simple, yet cheerful decor idea is on its way.

Ruby Tuesday

This Ruby Tuesday is a result of me being hungry. This chickpea and tomato salad by GreenLiteBites looks so fresh and delicious. I am pretty sure I will be having this for lunch at some point this week. I'm thinking this peach smoothie for breakfast and a zucchini turkey burger for dinner should round out the day nicely.

Typographic Matchmaking Poster  letterpress
Given many of our previous posts, it's obvious that Pretty Things has a thing for gorgeous typography and this letterpress poster is no exception. Jim Godfrey, a professor and designer in Utah, created this stunner featuring historical couples in contrasting typefaces. While the font matching here seems effortless, it is actually extremely hard to pair different typefaces and often requires hours upon hours of experimentation to get it right. Add letterpress printing to the mix and you've got yourself quite a handful! However, the results can be amazing if you know your stuff, and clearly Jim does.

I may have found the perfect statement piece to ease the always difficult transition into fall. I have been vehemently trying to avoid that word for the past week or so, but there's no denying that the end of summer is quietly approaching. Retail therapy is definitely necessary, and my first order of business is this amazing spiky, tribal meets rocker piece of loveliness. I have been a longtime fan of Biko jewelry and especially appreciate that each piece is handcrafted in Toronto by owner, Corinne Anestopoulos. With her most recent colour punched collection, you can keep a piece of summer with you always and forever.

I swear Etsy was created by some evil force hell bent on torturing me with handmade or vintage goodies from around the world. On a recent "window shop," I found these earrings from Vivid By Esther in New York and had to physically force myself not to whip out the credit card on the spot and start furiously typing numbers. Simple, geometric, and colour blocked, these beauties are in trend for the summer and they definitely won't break the bank. So perhaps I will whip out that credit card after all...

I am on vacation this week and as soon as I saw this recipe for Chocolate Waffles with Poached Cherries on Sunset, I knew I would be treating myself to it. What better way to start a lazy day?

Bigger Boat throw pillow

Inspired by geometric shapes and African and Scandinavian design, Mengsel creator Luzelle van der Westhuizen is a screen-printer extraordinaire. Covering your home in her bright and cheery patterns will instantly liven up any room. Just looking at the crimson pillow above makes me smile from ear to ear.
